Autumn is the ideal time to carry out a roof health check and address any issues before the worst of the British winter arrives. Here's how to prepare.

Why Autumn Is the Right Time

7 Steps to Prepare Your Roof for Winter

1. Clear gutters and downpipes Remove all debris from gutters and ensure downpipes are flowing freely. Autumn leaves are the main culprit — clearing them in late autumn (after the main leaf fall) is most effective.

2. Check for missing or cracked tiles Look carefully from the ground. Binoculars help. Any missing or obviously damaged tiles should be repaired before winter.

3. Inspect the ridge and chimney Crumbling ridge mortar and failing chimney pointing are particularly vulnerable to frost damage. If you can see gaps, get them addressed.

4. Check flashing around chimneys and skylights Look for any obviously lifted or cracked lead flashing. This is a common source of winter leaks.

5. Look at your fascia and soffit Any soft, spongy areas or obvious cracks need addressing before moisture freezes in them.

6. Check your loft for signs of water ingress Look for water staining on timbers or wet insulation. If you spot anything new since summer, get a roofer in to investigate.

7. Consider your flat roof If you have a flat roof, ensure drainage outlets are clear and the membrane surface is intact before the wet season.
